In an article this week from Healthcare IT News, author Chris Bowen describes how having direct access to patients' personal health records leads cyber thieves directly to them.  According to IBM research, "the vast majority of cybercrime is highly organized and generating unprecedented profits."

But why is healthcare such a big target?  The answer is that much of the healthcare industry's infrastructure is old and fragmented, with inconsistent security.  Hackers will never stop trying to find their way into a network with patient records in it, being that they can sell them for a significant price.  So what's the solution?

More healthcare organizations continue to partner with cloud managed service vendors that can provide them with the layers of security they need.  Cowen states, "It's a strategy that has obviously become necessary with today's cyber thieves in mind."  These layers give healthcare organizations time to identify a breach, delay the attackers, and repel the attack so they keep their most valuable assets safe.
